Hidden Gem Terraces for a Quiet Escape in Vienna

Vienna is famous for its grand café culture, but the city’s best outdoor tables are hiding in plain sight — down a leafy boulevard, through a restaurant’s back door, in a courtyard you’d never find by accident. These aren’t rooftop bars or glass pavilions. They’re terraces with character: the kind where the evening slows down and you actually stay longer than planned. Five spots worth sitting at this summer.

In summer, the terrace spills out onto Praterstraße — an idyllic, tree-lined boulevard that on warm evenings becomes one of the most atmospheric outdoor tables in Vienna. The menu is a fusion of Georgian and Mediterranean traditions: khinkali, kwerebi, antipasti served on a three-tiered platter, and Georgian wines. The interior was designed by architect Gregor Eichinger, but come summer, all you want is a seat outside, a glass of Saperavi, and nowhere to be.

Behind the Karlskirche, a second Goldener Papagei has opened in a former stationery shop on Argentinierstraße. The story goes back to family roots: Nathan Spasić's father was the first to bring Italian coffee culture to socialist Belgrade in the 1980s, under the name "Zlatni Papagaj".

The new address promises what the Leopoldstadt original never quite pulled off: an evening crowd, a proper Schanigarten vibe, and their own take on dumplings — cheekily called "Paparogi". A fresh chapter for an already cult name.

Nothing about the entrance prepares you for what's inside. The terrace opens onto a green inner courtyard that once belonged to Archduke Carl Ludwig — and it might just be the quietest summer corner in the city centre.

The backyard somehow blocks out all the city noise entirely, while the coffee sourced from Charles Fürht's roastery, available as espresso or filter — gives you every reason to stay. Regulars come with a book or a laptop and don't leave for hours.

Just a stone's throw from the Augarten, Café WG opened with one simple idea: a place where everyone feels welcome — like in a real Wohngemeinschaft. The menu runs through coffee and cake, lemonades, wine, spritzers and open sandwiches, all in an atmosphere that feels like someone's cosy, eclectic living room.

When the weather holds, the Gastgarten opens up — and that warm, slightly studenty energy moves outside. Pub quizzes, small concerts, and neighbourhood regulars included.

On balmy evenings, the large interior stays almost empty — everyone heads outside, and nearly every terrace table is taken. Shouko is a rare case where ramen and an outdoor seat actually make sense together: broths made without artificial colours or preservatives, noodles prepared by hand, and an atmosphere casual enough to stretch dinner into the whole evening.

The interior is modern and pared-back, the service genuinely warm — but in summer, book ahead and ask for a table outside.

None of these terraces announce themselves. No signs, no queues, no influencer crowds, just good food, the right atmosphere, and the particular satisfaction of having found somewhere that still feels like a secret. Vienna’s outdoor season is short. These five spots are worth every evening you give them.
