Summer in Vienna: Aperitivo Culture, Open-Air Evenings and Everything Worth Knowing

Aperitivo spots with the right light. Open-air cinemas that earn the evening. After-work formats that actually work. The Danube Canal spots everyone gatekeeps but not us. The season is short. Here’s where to put it.

Aperitivo and Where to Drink This Summer

The aperitivo ritual has quietly become one of Vienna's defining summer habits. It's not about the drink specifically, it's about the pause. After work, before dinner, somewhere between the heat of the afternoon and the cool of the evening.

This summer, Campari Austria presented its full Spritz portfolio for the Austrian market for the first time — five variations, one for every mood:

  • Campari Spritz — intensely bitter, deep red, an acquired taste that sticks.
  • Aperol Spritz — bittersweet and familiar. The one that started the conversation.
  • Sarti Spritz — fruity, floral, with lime instead of orange.
  • Mondoro Italian Hugo Spritz — the new one. Floral, fresh, sweet, mint garnish.
  • Crodino Spritz — alcohol-free. Same ritual, same glass.

BAr Campari

The brand's home in Vienna, where barchef David Penker first presented the full portfolio. Intimate and knowledgeable.
Rooftop bar at The Hoxton with a Caribbean soul. Tropical cocktails, cold beer, and that kind of laid-back energy that makes after-work feel like a mini escape. One of the better views in the city.

Open air cinema

Vienna on a summer evening is already something. But watching a film outside on a warm night, sky above, city around you — that’s exactly why we love this city. No better way to spend a weeknight. Here are our two highlights.

Kino wie noch nie

Since 1998, the garden of Filmarchiv Austria transforms into an open-air cinema across 60 summer evenings: classics, new discoveries, and conversations under the open sky. Food from Grünstern garden kitchen on site.

Film Festival at Rathausplatz

From July 4 to September 6. Free admission, open daily 11 am to midnight. The giant screen shows opera productions and concert performances, from the Beatles to Bernstein — against the backdrop of Vienna's neogothic City Hall, with food stalls from around the world. Arrive before dusk to get a seat.

Season Events worth going to

Not just about finding the right spot: it’s about showing up, slowing down, and seeing our community in real life. Vienna in summer has a way of making that easy.

iNTOUCH × Kleinod Prunkstück

One of Vienna's most iconic cocktail bars meets INTOUCH energy. Intimate, atmospheric, made for warm summer nights. 2nd edition, if you missed the first one, don't miss this.

Get on the guestlist.

It’s Toki Time ’26 х Krawall Bar

Dim lights, vinyl crackling, a highball in hand. Toki Suntory takes over Krawall Bar for one night of Japanese whisky and deep cuts on the decks. Free entry, good reasons to stay late.

By the Danube

Vienna has more water than most people expect. And in summer, the city knows exactly how to use it. The Danube, the canal, the hidden bays — each one a different version of the same slow afternoon. Somewhere to swim, somewhere to sit, somewhere to stay until the sun goes down.
Open daily from May to early September, 4 pm to 1 am. Waterside terrace with restaurants including Hattis Weinbar, Echo Thai, Pastis, and more. Book ahead for weekends.
Mediterranean flavors right at the water's edge. Bold dishes, generous portions, and a terrace overlooking the Danube. The kind of lunch that turns into an evening.
Vienna in summer is hard to waste. Aperitivo spots with the right light. Terraces that fill up fast. Open-air cinema until midnight. The canal at golden hour.

We’ve got a few favourites. Now you do too. Prost!
