CHECK IN. WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT THESE 5
HOTELS IN AUSTRIA

  • /
We’re all for getaways within Vienna itself, but when you really need to rest, there are some more.

Vienna has a way of filling your calendar before you notice. Sometimes the best thing you can do is stay — just somewhere else. Here are 5 hotels we’d actually book: three destinations for a weekend getaway right in the city, and two for when it isn’t enough.

The Companion / Vienna

A brand new Vienna address with its own kind of charm. We got to visit when the rooms were still unfinished — and somehow that made it even better. Bare walls, work in progress, everything still becoming what it’s going to be. The kind of atmosphere you can only catch once, before it’s complete.

BOCA for mediterranean dining where the heart behind every meal is Lauryn Therin: a New Zealand chef who came via Ottolenghi and Neni, and whose story you can feel in every dish. Calypso Bar — order the Vermouth & Jasmine and thank us later. Every detail feels intentional: true colours, soft tones. The kind of hotel that makes you want to check in even when you already live here.

Miiro Spittelberg / Vienna

A world of its own in the 7th district, where modern Vienna meets the old cobbled streets of Spittelberg. The kind of neighbourhood that still feels like it belongs to itself — quiet corners, creative energy, nothing too polished. Miiro sits right in the middle of it, and downstairs hides POCO: pizza by the pie, late-night bar, vinyl nights until 2am. Not just a place to sleep. A neighbourhood to belong to.

arpuria / ST. Anton am Arlberg

Hidden at the edge of the forest, five minutes from everything and somehow worlds away.

The room sets the tone immediately: deep green headboard, white linen, floor-to-ceiling windows opening onto a balcony with the forest right outside. The hotel offers a bowl of sweets on the windowsill: the kind of detail that makes you feel like someone actually thought about you being here. The bathroom follows the same logic: dark green tile, oval mirror, matte black fixtures. Clean, considered, nothing unnecessary.
Aria Spa is where the day slows down completely. Loungers under warm light, a sauna with a glass wall looking straight onto the snow, a piece of pure silence that's genuinely hard to find anywhere else.

Dinner earns its place too. The fine dining restaurant serves bread on a bed of spelt, local white wine, plates that arrive looking like they were designed. On another night - yakitori, gyoza, something darker and louder just down the road. Both feel right.

JULianhof / Südsteiermark

At Julianhof, time moves differently. Walk out onto the terrace and it’s all there: your own infinity pool, a jacuzzi beside it, loungers facing an uninterrupted view of the vineyards. Even the indoor sauna opens up to the same landscape — whether you’re there for a slow morning or a late evening wind-down.

Breakfast here feels like someone set up a private feast just for you. Every morning it arrives fresh at your table: salmon, pastries, fruit, muesli, local specialties — all arranged with the kind of care that makes you take your time. Vegetarian or vegan? Still just as beautifully done.
Inside, the design brings in a clear African vibe: natural wood, warm tones, textured fabrics, and pieces that feel handcrafted rather than styled. The freestanding bathtub, the lighting, the small details : everything is set up to make the space feel calm, warm, and a little bit unexpected.

Take a moment to actually stop, and you’ll feel it — the quiet, the light, the valley stretching out in front of you. Hard to believe Vienna is only a short drive away. Then breakfast arrives: fresh pastries, local cheeses, smoked salmon, seasonal fruit, homemade jams. A little feast that makes slow mornings feel like the whole point of being here.

Hotel SEPP / Maria Alm am Hochkönig

Adults only. Alpine boutique. Their motto is “luxury with a twist” and it perfectly describes the experience

The rooms come in two moods: Sporty, cosy and practical if you’re there for the slopes, with storage built for your equipment and a view of the mountains right from the bed, or woody — darker, warmer, made for slow days, spa time, and not checking the time. Five minutes from the ski lift either way.
The rooftop spa and infinity pool with a mountain panorama is the kind of highlight that makes you rebook before you’ve even checked out. Staying here gets you access to the spa and fine dining at Hotel Eder next door — a pleasant extra that quietly elevates the whole trip.

Evenings shift their mood every night. Different themes, different cuisines — one night Bella Italia, another fine dining that earns its place. Breakfasts slowly turn into brunches, served until 13:00. Where else have you seen that?

Slow mornings, spa days, ski runs, rooftop drinks. Save this for when the mountains start calling.
Five completely different worlds — a hotel that has made itself at home, a cobblestone neighbourhood with a late-night pizzeria downstairs, an adults-only alpine escape, a mountain retreat where silence is the whole point, and a Styrian hideaway where the vineyards never end.
