Top 5 Wine Taverns You Should Visit in Vienna This Autumn

In Vienna, we refer to the wine tavern as "Heuriger." A Heuriger is a special kind of tavern where local winemakers serve their wine under a special license. Open air wine taverns (called "Buschenschank" in German) are also especially popular during the grape harvest season (obviously because of Sturm — a drink from freshly pressed grapes that is just in the early stages of fermentation).

What makes Vienna truly unique as a capital city is the presence of commercial vineyards in and around the city itself. In fact, there is approximately one wine producer for every 2,500 people here! But enough with the facts; let us dive into the selection of the greatest spots to drink wine this autumn that we have carefully chosen and tested for you.

Der Weingarten

Senderstraße 19, 1210
There's a new spot you have to visit in Stammersdorf, where four friends have transformed their dream of owning a wine garden into a reality. There, you'll step into a warm and inviting atmosphere, surrounded by vineyards. What's noteworthy is that they've created various seating areas, allowing people to choose the one they find most comfortable for relaxation. It's a truly unique concept that we absolutely love!

On the menu you'll find a selection of local wines and spritzers for you to taste and enjoy. You can try various types of white and red wines, all crafted right here in the region. When it comes to the wine and food offerings, they maintain very reasonable prices, unlike some other places nowadays.

Buschenschank Mayer am Nussberg

Kahlenberger Str. 213, 1190
Mayer am Nussberg’s wine garden is one of the most popular in Vienna. It is located in the middle of the vineyards and offers a so beautiful view of Vienna! They offer spots with cozy lounge chairs, where guests can chill and enjoy pure nature. Alternatively, you can opt for rustic wooden benches, which create a festive atmosphere and are perfect for larger gatherings or families.

The wine garden also serves delicious local cold snacks that perfectly complement their wines. To get there, you have the option to take a leisurely stroll from Kahlenberg or hop on the Heurigen Express, the cute local train that will transport you from the U4 Heligenstadt subway station and various other locations along the route that you can check here. The ticket costs 5 EUR for a one-way trip. Also, consider booking a table in advance to secure your spot.

Weingut & Heuriger Christ

Amtsstraße 12, 1210
The Christ Winery has been in the family for almost 400 years! They’ve got the perfect soil, location, and climate in Bisamberg for growing grapes. And the special geology around here is what lets them grow all kinds of different grapes. Rainer Christ takes care of some really old grapevines.

The winery got a modern makeover in 2005, but it still has a cozy feel. Just remember, they’re only open in November until the end of the year, so be sure to plan a visit to this legendary place.

Buschenschank & Bio-Weinbau Obermann

Cobenzlgasse 102, 1190
More than a hundred years ago, in Grinzing, they began crafting some of the world's best wines. Martin Obermann is now in charge, continuing the family tradition into the fifth generation, and he's all about using organic methods to tend to his vineyards. When the weather's good, you can enjoy their wines in a lovely garden, surrounded by pretty oleander flowers.

Müllers Heuriger & Weingut

Cobenzlgasse 38, 1190
The story of the Müller family in Grinzing started back in 1952 when their grandfather, Hans Schmidt, purchased an old farmhouse on Cobenzlgasse 38, complete with a small vineyard in the Ried Schreiber. They turned the former stable into a restaurant and transformed the orchard into a lovely guest garden.

With time, the winery expanded to what it is today, covering 5 hectares of vineyards. Now, the third generation is in charge, carrying on the family business with a modern touch while still honoring tradition.
